West Virginia became the 35th state of the United States on June 20, 1863, during the Civil War. It was the only state in the US to officially form through a separation from a Confederate state (as you might guess, Virginia) during the war.

West Virginia is often called the “Mountain State.” This is due to its rugged terrain and mountainous landscape.
3. It is in the Appalachian Mountains.

At an elevation of 4,863 feet, or 1.48 km, Spruce Knob is the highest point in West Virginia. However, the highest point in the US, total, is Mount McKinley, or Denali, in Alaska – which is almost four times the height of Spruce Knob!

Historically, coal mining has been an important industry in West Virginia. In fact, the state’s other nickname is ”Coal Country.” The state is one of the top coal-producing states in the nation to this day.
