James Augustine Aloysius Joyce, born 2 February 1882 in Dublin, was a novelist and poet who was well known for writing the novel Ulysses (1922). Before Ulysses, he wrote a collection of 15 short stories called Dubliners (1914) and the novels A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man (1916) and Finnegans Wake (1939). Joyce taught English and learned Italian in Trieste, Italy; he could speak 17 languages including Greek, Arabic, and Sanskrit.
