What does 3 magpies mean? And is there any truth behind the myth

In ancient European culture, three magpies means good journey. There's a rhyme that goes 3 magpies is for a girl. These are all not confirmed by fact though.

Here's a version of the magpie rhyme:

One for sorrow

Two for joy

Three for a girl

Four for a boy

Five for silver

Six for gold

Seven for a secret never to be told

Eight for a wish

Nine for a kiss

Ten a surprise you should be careful not to miss

Eleven for health

Twelve for wealth

Thirteen beware it's the devil himself.

Some say ways to ward off bad luck brought on by a lone magpie include saying, “Good morning Mr. Magpie. How is your wife today,” removing your hat, spitting three times over shoulder and flapping your arms like wings and cawing to imitate the magpie's missing mate.
