NHS walk-in centres (WICs) give convenient access to a range of medication and are run by Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs). There are more than seven million attendances at type 3 accident & emergency services (i.e WiCs, UCCs and MIUs) in England, dealing with minor injuries and illnesses.
NHS WICs are usually supervised by a nurse and are available to everyone. Patients do not need an appointment. Nearly all centres are open 365 days a year and have outside office hours.
According to Liverpool Echo news, a member of staff from Liverpool Community Health NHS Trust’s nursing team has been recognised for his commitment to creating a more positive health and safety culture within the Trust. Ray Gerrard is a Walk in Centre Nurse Practitioner at South Liverpool NHS Treatment Centre in Garston and was recently awarded the National Safety Representative of the Year Award 2012 at the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) congress.
