What year did the car registration plates start changing twice a year. And what years can an X reg. car be pls?

In March 1999 the system change from annual to twice yearly releases to prevent the annual rush of purchasing new vehicle once a year in August.

As per The Telegraph, March and September are normally the strongest months for new car registrations, as this is when registration plates update, and consumers are attracted into dealers by the prospect of buying a vehicle that signals how new it is.

How old a car with an X registration depends on whether the letters are prefix or suffix.

• A car with a prefix X reg plate will have first been registered between 1st September 2000 and 28th February 2001.

• A car with a suffix X reg plate will have first been registered between 1st August 1981 and 31st July 1982.

You can easily work out how old a vehicle is once you understand the way the 'age identifier' changes over time. Here's how to read number plates shared by The AA.
