Who is the man in cowboy hat always watching wimbledon in the family box ?
The man in the cowboy hat always watching Wimbledon from the players’ box is David Spearing. The man that occupies one of the greatest seats in sports is a "retired" structural engineer in his mid 70s.
Spearing is an Honorary Steward whose job is to sit with the players’ coaches and family on Centre Court and to assist the public. He’s been at it since 1974.
Mr. Spearing spends most of the year in Abu Dhabi, where he has lived for more than 40 years. He runs a structural engineering consultancy which bears his name. 2013 Championships marks his 16th year in the role as Honorary Steward.
Latest news: Andy Murray beats Novak Djokovic to win Wimbledon 2013. The Scot, 26, converted his fourth championship point in a dramatic final game to win 6-4 7-5 6-4 and claim his second major title after winning the US Open in 2012.
Of interest, when Murray won, he almost forgot to hug his mum in the midst of all the excitement and the Stetson-wearing Spearing quickly ushered forward mum Judy to exchange a word with her son. Watch Spearing at work below:
